IDE to SATA Adapter - ATA vs. SATA Comparison

Model:  Unknown

Manufacturer:  House Brand

A while back, we reviewed the Shuttle AS45GTR motherboard which was the first to introduce Serial ATA to the market.   We are now starting to see other motherboard manufacturers releasing SATA capable boards.  What we haven't seen much of yet are the next generation hard drives that sport the new interface.   We are still skeptical as to how much better will this new interface be over IDE.  Sure, a major plus is the smaller cable it uses but how about performance?  We at ExtremeMhz discovered a neat little adapter supplied by PCMicroStore that will convert current IDE hard drives to next generation Serial ATA.  How will they compare in performance?  Let's find out!

In the package you will find the small adapter and a power cable.

Above we have some closeup pics of the adapter.  You have your serial connector, power connector and jumper for ATA 100/133mhz.

Setup

Setting up the drive in Serial ATA mode was somewhat tricky.   First, we needed to enable RAID in the BIOS and select SATA as the channel to use as shown below:

We then had to download the latest Highpoint RAID drivers from Shuttle in order to get it working properly.
