Conclusions

The XG Gamer Ice Age heatsink has extremely high
performance at the expense of noise. This device is clearly aimed at the
overclocker crowd, more specifically the ones who like their case to sound
like a jet when they turn it on. The Ice Age is definitely a looker, as all
the detailing and anodizing certainly makes for a sharp looking heatsink. The
locking mechanism has a very nice design, but may interfere with caps or other
items that reside close to the stock P4 clips. I was not very impressed with
the polish and thermal compound on the bottom of the Ice Age. When I first
tried to run the load tests, I started getting weird artifacts on the screen
that ended up being caused by and uneven layer of thermal compound on the
chip. The compound itself can be overlooked, as it’s easy to remove and most
Overclockers would do that anyway. More attention should definitely go into
the polishing of the contact face however. The Ice Age goes for about $25 USD
out on the street, so it’s certainly a cost effective solution. EM
