IBM Ultrastar 36Z15 SCSI Drive:  SCSI Performance at ATA Price

Model:  36Z15

Manufacturer:  IBM

Reviewed By:  Miguel

Review Date:  12/20/02

Most PC's today use IDE drives because they are cheap, offer higher capacity and perform quite well for their intended purpose.  Many of us rule out SCSI as an option mainly due to the high costs in operating such devices.  SCSI drives are typically much more expensive than IDE drives and also require additional hardware to operate them.  However, today we look at a low cost solution for those looking for a high performance SCSI setup.   We will be looking at the IBM Ultrastar 36Z15 18.4GB 15K SCSI Drive with a LSI Logic U160 Host Adapter. How much does this setup cost?  How does it perform?  The answers will surprise you.

Let's take a closer look at the drive:

Features

  • Rotational speeds of 15,000 RPM and average seek time as low as 3.4ms to help boost performance.

  • Capacities of 36 or 18GB provide configuration flexibility.

  • Utilizes technologies such as Drive Fitness Test, load/unload, and glass substrate disks to enhance reliability and robustness and to prolong the lifespan of the drive.

  • large multi-segmented buffers

  • sophisticated command queuing system

  • hardware automation
