Installation
I
would like to clarify a few false comments lingering around the web in
regards to connectivity. The Philips GoGear HD6330 does not
require the software to access and use the player. Many have stated
this and it is simply not true. First of all, this player only
supports Windows XP systems. If you do plug the player in a WinXP
machine without installing the software, it will be recognized and you'll
have access to it, but there are features that just won't be their until you
do make use of the software. I'll elaborate on this much more when I do
touch on those features. However, let me briefly show you how it does
work without the use of software...

When you plug it in, it will be quickly recognized in WinXP and listed under
Audio Devices in My Computer. While it doesn't really install itself
as a separate drive letter, it will function in the exact same fashion.
This new player does double as a portable storage device and you'll have
access to both data and media content on the device. At this point,
you will be able to use it in an explorer like function and simply drag &
drop files to the player. However, there are certain features that
will require Windows Media Player that is bundled with the unit.
There are two CDs included with the player. Let's take a look at
what's included in the first CD.

Before you can proceed, it will require you to choose where you did purchase
their player. After that, you'll be prompted with some options, which
include the installation of the modified version of WMP 10. Now, this
may confuse a few so I'll try and provide information based on my findings.
Most of you may already have WMP 10 installed and may refuse to install
their version. After testing with both, I can confirm you can use the
HDD6330 with either player. The only noticeable difference between
their version of WMP10 was a direct link on the player to the preferred
music store. Also, you will need to use WMP10 in order to take
advantage of some playback features such as song rating and playback of
those high rated tunes. This functionality will not be available if you do not install
their software and opt to just use the drag and drop functionality instead.
What is
Playforsure?
The
PlayForSure Logo solves the current confusion of which devices work with
which online music (and video) stores. This logo identifies which device to
purchase or which music/video stores to buy from to ensure they work
together.

You'll be given the option of choosing your preferred music store. The
two options are Napster and MSN Music. The second CD contains some WMP
plug-ins designed to to function with your player. There is also a
"Device Manager" application shown below...

This
small utility will basically allow you to upgrade your firmware and repair
your device. Repairing basically consists of restoring your device to
factory defaults, an option that is actually accessible from the player
itself.

The
HDD6330 ships with a slightly modified version of Windows Media
Player 10. However, you can still download and use the very latest
release from Microsoft. You can use WMP 10 to easily sync, purchase or
rate your music. Again, most WinXP power users will be
quite familiar with the software and its capabilities.
