LG GSA-4163B Triple Format Double Layer DVD Writer Review

CD Write Tests

1. CD-DVD Speed - CDR Media

The LG GSA-4120B is capable of writing to CDR's at a maximum speed of 40x. We used a wide variety of media to test its 40x capabilities.

The LG GSA-4163B uses the slower Z-CLV method of writing to CDR media.  Writing starts at 16x and the 40x zone is reached at about the 50min mark.  The average write speed was 31.70x.

In our actual write tests, the 4163B wrote exactly 695MB of data in 3:25 minutes.  As always, I gathered a variety of media in order to test compatibility and record write times.   The table below shows the results...

CDR Brand Write Speed Write Time
Verbatim (super Azo) 52x 40x 3:27
Verbatim (Super Azo) 48X 40x 3:24
Philips 40X 40x 3:25
Ritek 48X 40x 3:29
Imation 24X (Music CDR) 40x 3:34
FUJI 32X 32x 4:18
Sony 32X 32x 4:13

As I saw with previous models, CDR media compatibility was excellent.  It wrote to all discs at their rated speed and was able to write to Imation 24x "music" CDRs at 40x with no playback issues.

How about write quality?  Let's have a look at the results using Nero's disc quality test.  We used a supported Lite-On drive for the write quality tests.  The results are shown below...

With CD media, this is measured by the number of C1 and C2 errors. All discs will report a certain number of C1 errors, but what you should be more concerned with is the number of C2 errors reported. Fortunately, there were no C2 errors reported with Philips 40x discs and overall write quality was very good.

2. CD-DVD Speed - CDRW Media

The LG GSA-4163B is capable of writing to CDRW media at 24x.  Unfortunately, like the previous models, it was unable to write at this speed to either of the "Ultra Speed" discs used in testing.

CDR Brand Write Speed Write Time
Memorex (Ultra Speed) 16~24x 16x 5:42
Ritek 16~24 24X CDRW 16x 5:47

The drive wrote only at 16x to both Memorex and Ritek CDRW discs capable of 24x writing.

3. Over-burning and 99min CDR Media

The LG GSA-4163B does not support 99min CDRs but fortunately, unlike the previous models, it will overburn up to 94min without issues.  In our tests, anything above 94min failed.  What was quite good was the ablility to write to Melody branded 99min media at 40x.
