Features
As
with previous models, this drive has some impressive media support.
Let's take a look at a few of its key features.
The LG 4100 series drives offer a unique feature
that have made them quite popular over other models. Unlike the
competition, it is a triple format DVD writer, offering full read/write
support with DVD-RAM media.
This model supports 40x read/write capabilities
to CDR media. While not quite as fast as some of its competitors, the
difference between 40x and 48x is quite minimal.
The LG GSA-4163B is capable of writing to both
DVD+R and DVD-R discs at the current maximum speed of 16x.
The most impressive feature of the new GSA-4163B
is the support for 4x double layer writing. This truly brings it to
another level, competing well against the two most popular writers on the
market, the NEC ND-3500A and the Pioneer DVR-108. Most of our readers
are at least somewhat familiar with double layer writing by now. With
this said, I will no longer go into detail regarding this fairly new feature.
If you are unfamiliar with this new technology, we recommend you take a look
at our previous articles for additional information.
Installation

As with all optical storage drives under Windows
XP, installation is a breeze. The drive was correctly identified under
Device Manager.

Nero InfoTool correctly identified all its
supported features. While the sample we received did ship with the older
A100 firmware, I quickly upgraded it to the latest A101 firmware release for
testing purposes.
