Did you know that your Pocket PC 2002 device can
connect to the internet using your wireless cell phone?
Yes. It's true. All you need is a data
enabled wireless phone. Most service providers like Cingular
Wireless have this capability. Many modern cell phones available on
the market today have this capability as well. I'm using a Nokia
3360 as an example in this tutorial. If your service provider offers
wireless internet, then chances are you'll be able to use your cell phone
as a modem.
The following guide will show you how easy this can
be done.
|
From
your PPC's Start Menu, click on "Settings"
You
should see the screen above. |
|
Click
on the "Connections" tab and then click on the "Connections" Icon. |
|
You
should now see the above screen. From the drop down menu, select "New" to
create a new connection. |
The
next screen should prompt you for a name for your new connection
settings.
Enter a name and click the "Modem" tab. |
|
Click on "New" to select the proper modem for
this
connection.
|
Enter a name and select
"Generic IrDA modem" from the drop down menu. Set the baud rate to 57600
as shown above then click on "Next. |
|
Enter the phone number you will be using to
connect. This should be your ISP's number.
Click on "Next" to continue.
|
Click on the box next to "Wait for dial tone
before dialog to uncheck this option. This must be unchecked for your
phone to properly dial. Click on "Finish" |
|
You
should now be back to your "Connections" screen as shown above. Click on
the "Dialing Locations" tab and enter your Area Code and
select "Tone dialing". Then click on "Dialing Patterns". |
Here you will enter the proper dialing
patterns in your area. Click "ok" to close this window.
|
|
That's it! Your done! Now you can click tap and
hold on the new connection you created and click
on
"connect". Align your cell phones IR port with
the
IR port on your Pocket PC. The screen above
will appear prompting you to enter your ISP's username and password.
Select "Save password"
and
click "OK".
|
Your Pocket PC should show the popup above
showing the status of your connection. Your cell phone should display the
following text: "Data Call"
Note: as long as your mobile phone displays
this message, your connection is active.
|
As
you can see, it's quite simple and does not require you to install any
software. Your Pocket PC already comes with the proper drivers to connect
using your IR port.
Pocket PC 2002 connection manager is great! There is no need to go into
settings/connections every time. Connection Manager will automatically connect
when an action requires an internet connection. (Example: Checking Email)
