The ExtremeMhz flagship
case project will be presented in 3 parts. The first installment will consist
of an overview. Part 2 will concentrate on the details and performance of the
cooling system. Part 3 will go into the construction of the case and describe
the mods that were performed. The articles will be spaced about a week apart.
The specs for the flagship
case are as follows:

NONE---damn it! |
In the planning phase we
first determined what we wanted to accomplish as well as what our desired
outcomes should be:
- The system would be built on an AMD Dual
CPU platform.
- Maximum cooling would be achieved in a
water cooled environment.
- The entire system had to be
self-contained…no external anything!
- A balance had to be achieved between a
maximum overclock and rock solid stability.
- The final product should be aesthetically
pleasing.
Finally I wanted to keep the computer safely locked in my home office; away
from the prying eyes of undesirable elements (I don’t want to mention my wife
and kids by name) ;).
The case was designed by us after determining which components were going to
be used to accomplish our goals. The design was submitted to AcrylicPC, a
company in Canada who delivered a product that exceeded our expectations. The
case specs are as follows:
|
Dimensions |
36”x18”x14” |
|
Material |
3/8” cast acrylic throughout |
|
Weight |
35 lbs. |
|
Fan openings |
2x120mm intake, 1x120mm top exhaust, 2 120mm for
radiator |
|
Switches |
Power and reset |
|
LEDs |
HD activity and Power. Both embedded into the cases
frame |
|
Bays |
10 exposed 51/4” |
|
Other features |
Removable MOBO tray, rounded corners, removable
side panel and drive cage, 20mm hole in bottom of case for cable
management. |
Here is a picture we received
from Frank at AcrylicPC when the case was completed, just prior to him
shipping it out.

In the following
picture you can see the case populated by the components we decided to use.

From top to bottom we installed 2X Seagate
cheetah 15K SCSI drives in Coolermaster HDD bay coolers, Creative SB Platinum
Live Drive, 2 empty bays for future expansion, Kenwood Truex 72X CD, Plextor
12x10x32A CDRW, Pioneer 16X DVD, Dig-Doc (used for temperature monitoring
only), 2X Compunurses to measure AMD chip temperatures, PC Mods Rheobus, and
finally a Matrix Orbital VFD. Sitting directly behind the Compunurses sits a
modded Western Digital HDD.
The following picture shows
a ¾ front shot of the case in low light conditions.

Moving on to the left side
of the case you can observe the drive cage components as well as the
motherboard and water cooling subsystem.

The Enermax 651P-VE PSU was removed from its casing and
paced in front of bottom intake fan.

The PSU sits on a double acrylic tray. Red, white, and
blue LEDs were imbedded into the tray for effect. The PSU is not visible in
this shot…it sits directly in front of the fan in the case.

Moving to the back of the case you will notice that the
radiator is encapsulated in an acrylic shroud to further its cooling
capabilities.

This double acrylic tray which sits on the interior of
the back case panel holds the inverters that were used for case lighting, 2X
“microbuses” to power case lights and spot cooling fans, as well as a
30mmX30mmX5mm speaker for the motherboard.
The following is a picture of the cases’ right panel
side. Notice the back side of the Iwill MPX2 board. To get a better gauge of
the size of this case, keep in mind that this motherboard measures 12”x12”.
