EFO Wireless Handheld Keyboard & Mouse Review

Design

Upon first glance, you simply can't help but notice just how unusual this product really is.  In fact, aside from its minimalist design, you can tell the main focus was on its practical functionality rather than its quality.  Think of a dummy model of a product and that's exactly how this keyboard looks and feels.  It is so light and the white plastic over black truly will confuse you as to the fact it is a working model.  Its design, although highly practical, just couldn't be any simpler.

They do have an all white model but the one sent over was their more appealing black model that will likely fit in well with your home theater setup.  The front sports a large touchpad, mouse buttons and QWERTY keyboard.  On the top are a number of very small blue LED's to indicate activity, connectivity and other functions and/or status.

The only switch you'll find on the side is located on the bottom.  This is your on/off switch.  Right in the middle is a mini USB jack that is used for charging the keyboard.  No, there's no external batteries to deal with or worry about!  That's certainly a nice touch.

Above are some closer shots of the large trackpad and keyboard.  The touchpad is a bright white and appears as if it is covered in some sort of cardboard.  That's not the case and what you see is the actual surface.  The keys are also bright white and there are two large left/right mouse buttons directly below the pad.  Now, when you look at the bright white keys, you will think there's no way they are illuminated.  Well, they are and they light up quite nicely as well.  They sport a deep red and keys are easily seen in even the darkest room.  Enlarge the pic to the right above for a demonstration of just how good the backlighting is.  Now, it is a bit confusing at first as to how to enable the backlight.  What you'll need to do is press the 'RF" button twice.  Once you do, keys will instantly light up and will even automatically turn off when there is no activity.

As an HTPC enthusiast, I have shown you all a number of small keyboards I recommend for such use.  In fact, I love small keyboards for this kind of use and the smaller, the better.  This one takes the cake as demonstrated in the picture above.  From top to bottom, you have my trusty-old BTC keyboard/mouse followed by the super tiny Brando Wireless Keyboard/Mouse I reviewed here.  You can see just how significantly smaller this keyboard really is in comparison.

A Truly Small Keyboard

Sure, I've tried hard to emphasize just how small this keyboard really is.  However, to truly give you an idea and provide the best example, I just had to take a couple of pics next to two standard remote controls...

It sports a QWERTY keyboard and large touchpad, yet it is significantly smaller than your average remote control.  It is the perfect companion and many will love to have a keyboard this small handy for use with their HTPC.

Installation

Nothing much to talk about here.  Installation couldn't be any simpler and this keyboard/mouse was tested and proven to work with Windows XP, Windows Vista SP2 and Windows 7.  No issues whatsoever and there's no pairing or additional steps that need to be taken.  Simply plug the USB receiver in and turn on the keyboard.
