Bundled Software

The DW1655 came with a CD containing all the
necessary software, including the LightScribe API. Please note that
you will need to properly install LightScribe in order for you to take
advantage of this feature. When you install the Nero6 OEM Suite, it
will install the LightScribe API at the end of the install process.
Also note that if you attempt to browse the CD and try to run the
LightScribe installer by itself, it will fail. You must either install
the Nero6 Suite or grab the LightScribe install from the net.

A newer version of their QSuite software was
sent over along with this drive. It has additional menus not found in
previous versions that are supported with the DW1655. The application
consists of 6 different tools: BookType, QScan, WOPC, Test Write,
Solid Burn and Overspeed. Let's take a closer look at what each of
these are...

Fortunately, BenQ drives allow you to change
the booktype of all your +R media, including DVD+R, DVD+RW and DVD+R DL
media. You can use this utility to change your booktype. Next,
we have the QScan feature, which is basically a tool that will help
determine the quality of the disc used. This is done by measuring TE/FE
signal of blank media in order to determine the disc quality in a clear
graphical description. This is certainly a nice tool for those who are
unfamiliar with what brands of media are indeed of the highest quality.

WOPC is one of the features typically found in
BenQ drives. It can be enabled/disabled from this menu, however, I do
not recommend you disable this feature when writing to media. New in
this edition of QSuite is the ability to enable Test Write. This will
basically allow you to simulate writing, something that is not generally
supported by a majority of burning tools. This can be used by those
who are having trouble burning media and would like to prevent coasters by
first testing the writing process before the actual burn.

Both SolidBurn and Overspeed can be enabled in
QSuite as well. Solid Burn is a feature originally introduced by
Philips. It is basically a self-learning feature that will provide optimal
writing conditions on the particular media being used. The information is
stored on an EPROM chip, which can actually be cleared out via the software
BenQ provides. This is a feature that would generally be used when writing
to lower quality media. Overspeed is a nice feature for those who know
their media well and only use the highest quality media for burning.
Enabling this feature will allow you to write to lower speed media at 12x or
higher. However, please keep in mind that you should only take advantage of
it if you have high quality media on hand.
