Features & Install
There is BenQ's second LightScribe drive. While their first was a
little behind on features, this one certainly sports the latest.
BenQ has bumped up the read/write speed with
the DW1655. It is capable of reading and writing to CD-R media at
speeds up to 48x, making it a speedy CD writer as well.
16x
writing is also supported on both DVD+R and DVD-R discs. Also
impressive, is their drives usually have no rip lock, meaning you will
likely hit 16x read speeds as well. I'll confirm this in testing
later...
Fast 8x double layer writing is supported with
+R DL media.
This is the only area where it falls behind
just slightly. While some current drives can write at 6x to -R DL
media, the DW1655 supports only 4x writing.
BenQ drives also carry a few of their own exclusive features designed for
ultimate write quality as follows:
As writing speed is increased, signal loss
becomes the key cause of a Significant decrease in writing quality. BenQ’s
High-Speed Signal Algorithm manages the high EFM(Eight-to-Fourteen
Modulation) frequency signal loss that often takes place at high-speed
writing - ensuring superb writing quality.
Unlike other drives which preset the writing power before the actual writing
of data, the WOPC II (Walking Optimal Power Control II) algorithm constantly
evaluates writing quality and adjusts the writing power accordingly in order
to ensure optimal writing quality over the entire disc. The BLER OPC (Block
Error Rate Optimal Power Control) further enhances the writing quality near
the end of the disc, where the risk of warping is higher.
Installation

Installation was a nightmare for me but it was a result of our sample and
not something worth getting into. The drive you buy, once available,
should be as easy to install as any other optical drive.

Nero InfoTool properly identifies all its
supported features. BenQ sent the sample with firmware BCAB.
This will be the firmware used throughout testing.
