BenQ DW1625 LightScribe 16x DVD+-RW DL Writer Review

CD Write Tests

The DW1625 is capable of writing to CD-R media at 40x.  While not exactly the fastest writer to this media, the difference in write times between 40x and 48x is very minimal.

1. CD-DVD Speed - CDR Media

The DW1625 uses the faster CAV method of writing to CD-R media.  In our Nero CD-DVD Speed write tests, writing starts at just under 18x and hits its maximum 40x write speed at the end of the disc.  The average write time was just over 30x.

In our actual write tests, the BenQ DW1625 wrote 695MB in 3:28 minutes.  The disc used for testing was a quality Verbatim 52x CD-R.  This is just slightly higher than the speediest drives on the market.  A variety of additional media was tested with the DW1625 in order to thoroughly test its media compatibility.

CDR Brand Write Speed Write Time
Verbatim (super Azo) 52x 40x 3:28
Verbatim (Super Azo) 48X 40x 3:30
Philips 40X 40x 3:42
Ritek 48X 40x 3:29
Imation 24X 40x 3:22
FUJI 32X 32x 4:13
Sony 32X 32x 4:11

CD-R media compatibility was very good, able to write to all discs at their rated speed.  Was even able to write to my trusty Imation 24x "Music" CDRs at 40x.  The fastest write times were achieved with quality Verbatim media as well as the Imation Music CDRs.

Write Quality

1. CD-DVD Speed - CDRW Media

The P-CAV method of writing is used to write to this format.  However, its maximum 24x write speed is achieved early in the writing process.  This results in some rather speedy writing as shown below.

CDR Brand Write Speed Write Time
Memorex (Ultra Speed) 24x 24x 4:18
Ritek 24X CDRW 24x 4:21

The drive was also able to write to both my 24x rated CDRW discs at 24x.  Write times were just slightly over 4 minutes.

3. CD-R Write Quality

With CD media, this is measured by the number of C1 and C2 errors. All discs will report a certain number of C1 errors, but what you should be more concerned with is the number of C2 errors reported.  If using Nero's Disc Quality Test, I recommend you perform the test using either 24x or 32x speeds.

While the number of C1 Errors was much higher than some other drives I've tested, it reported no C2 errors using a Verbatim 52x disc.  Write quality was pretty good.

4. Over-burning and 99min CDR Media

Fortunately, BenQ writers do offer full support for over-burning.  While it was not able to write to my Melody 48X 99min media at its rated speed, it still was able to write 99mins of data with no playback related issues.
