BenQ DW1625 LightScribe 16x DVD+-RW DL Writer Review

DVD Read Tests

BenQ drives do not have a rip lock in firmware.  This should result in some rather impressive read performance with DVD media.  Let's have a look...

1. CD-DVD Speed - Single Layer DVD

Test Results

Transfer Speed

Average: 12.05x

Start: 6.62x

End: 16.09x

Seek Times

Random: 93ms

1/3: 105ms

Full: 160ms

CPU Usage

1X: 6%

2X: 22%

4X: 34%

8X: 60%

Read performance on single layer DVD-Video was about as good as it gets.  Its quite a speedy drive, able to easily hit 16x read speeds.  Seek times and CPU Usage were very low.  The results here are the best I've seen yet on a 16x drive.

2. CD-DVD Speed - Dual Layer PTP DVD

Test Results

Transfer Speed

Average: 5.51x

Start: 3.34x

End: 6.81x

Seek Times

Random: 92ms

1/3: 102ms

Full: 148ms

CPU Usage

1X: 6%

2X: 14%

4X: 23%

8X: N/A

With dual layer PTP discs, the results were fairly similar in comparison to their DW1620.  Seek Times, however, were lower.  Its max read rate was just under 7x.  This is not that bad and should be a decent ripper, as we will test later.

2. CD-DVD Speed - Dual Layer OTP DVD

Test Results

Transfer Speed

Average: 6.07x

Start: 3.33x

End: 7.99x

Seek Times

Random: 100ms

1/3: 110ms

Full: 165ms

CPU Usage

1X: 6%

2X: 12%

4X: 67%

8X: n/a

Performance with dual layer OTP discs was excellent and almost identical to the DW1620.  Once again though, we do see an improvement in Seek Times.  Very good results here.

4. CD-DVD Speed - DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+R, DVD+RW

To capture maximum transfer rates of recordable media, I gathered up some discs of all formats.

The results were once again, very similar in comparison to the DW1620.  8x seems to be the max read speed with recordable media.
