BenQ DW1625 LightScribe 16x DVD+-RW DL Writer Review

CD Read Tests

Let's take a quick look at the test system specs first...

Test System Specifications

CPU:  Pentium 4 2.4GHZ @ 2.6GHz
Motherboard: Shuttle AS45GT/R
Memory: Corsair XMS3200 (1GB)
Hard Drive: Western Digital 40GB 7200rpm
Video Card: ATI Radeon 9600

1. CD-DVD Speed - Pressed CD

For the CD read tests, I used a CD that was just under 76min in length in order to properly capture its maximum read speed.  The same disc was copied to a CD-R and CD-RW for further testing.

Test Results

Transfer Speed

Average: 30.29x

Start: 17.09x

End: 40.16x

Seek Times

Random: 101ms

1/3: 112ms

Full: 165ms

CPU Usage

1X: 1%

2X: 2%

4X: 4%

8X: 7%

With the pressed CD, the DW1625 was able to reach its maximum 40x read speed.  The seek times were very good and an improvement over their previous model.  CPU Usage rates were about the norm.

2. CD-DVD Speed - CDR

Test Results

Transfer Speed

Average: 31.03x

Start: 17.78x

End: 41.03x

1/3: 105ms

Full: 171ms

CPU Usage

1X: 1%

2X: 2%

4X: 4%

8X: 7%

With CDR media, the results were very impressive.  It was able to hit a 41x read rate and the seek times were very low.  CPU Usage was the same as the results from the pressed CD.

3. CD-DVD Speed - CDRW

Test Results

Transfer Speed

Average: 30.99x

Start: 17.83x

End: 40.89x

Seek Times

2X: 2%

4X: 4%

8X: 7%

I've found that most drives tend to struggle a bit with CDRW discs.  However, the BenQ DW1625 handled these discs exceptionally well.  Again, the drive had no problem hitting its max read rate and seek times were once again very good.

4. DAE - Advanced Quality Tests

The DW1625 did fairly well in the audio extraction tests, but could not keep up with on-the-fly copying at higher speeds.  Leadout info could not be read on disc.
