BenQ DW1620 16x DVD+-RW Double Layer Writer Review

Features

The DW1620 is capable of reading and writing CD media at 40x.  While not as fast as some of its competitors, the difference between 40x and 48x is quite minimal.

Unlike a few 16x writers we have looked at previously, the DW1620 is capable of writing to both DVD+R and DVD-R discs at 16x.  It is also capable of writing to re-writable media at 4x.

The DW1620 adds full support for DVD+R DL media and is capable of writing to these discs at 2.4x.  This is still considered a first gen double layer writer.  Only NEC and Pioneer seem to be the only manufacturers release second gen 4x double layer writers.

BenQ drives also carry their own exclusive features as follows:

As writing speed is increased, signal loss becomes the key cause of a Significant decrease in writing quality. BenQ’s High-Speed Signal Algorithm manages the high EFM(Eight-to-Fourteen Modulation) frequency signal loss that often takes place at high-speed writing - ensuring superb writing quality.

Unlike other drives which preset the writing power before the actual writing of data, the WOPC II (Walking Optimal Power Control II) algorithm constantly evaluates writing quality and adjusts the writing power accordingly in order to ensure optimal writing quality over the entire disc. The BLER OPC (Block Error Rate Optimal Power Control) further enhances the writing quality near the end of the disc, where the risk of warping is higher.

Installation

As with any DVD writer, installation was a breeze in Window XP and was identified properly in Device Manger.

All supported features were identified using Nero's InfoTool.  This drive does not support DVD-RAM and Mt. Rainer.  The firmware on our OEM sample was B7C9 but we flashed the drive with the latest firmware for testing, B7K9.
