Pioneer DVR-108 16X DVD+-RW 4x Double Layer Writer

CD Write Tests

1. CD-DVD Speed - CDR Media

The only specs on this drive that don't compete with other multi-format DVD writers are the CDR write times.  Unlike a majority of other drives which support 40x writing, this drive will support CDR writing at 32x.

Another thing to note is that the drive uses the slower Zone CLV recording method.  The Nero write transfer tests shown above demonstrate this use.  This method basically divides the CDR into three zones in which the speed does increase.

I gathered up a variety of media to test compatibility and write times.  Below is a chart of the results.

CDR Brand Write Speed Write Time
Verbatim (Super Azo) 52X 32X 3:54
Verbatim (Super Azo) 48X 32X 3:56
Philips 40X 32X 4:12
Ritek (Ridata Brand) 48X 32X 4:17
Imation 40X 32X 3:59
FUJI 32X 32X 4:10
Sony 32X 32X 4:06

The results were actually very good!  It wrote to all media at its maximum write speed of 32x and was able to write exactly 695MB of data in under 4 minutes to some brands of media.  Some may consider its 32x write speed somewhat of a disappointment, however, my experience with those drives that do burn at 40x is that they actually won't write to all discs at that speed.  With this drive, you are at least sure you will be able to write at 32x on just about any disc.

2. CD-DVD Speed - CDRW Media

This drive handled CDRW media exceptionally good as well.  It was able to write to both Ultra Speed 24x discs at its maximum write speed.  Below is a table with the results.

CDR Brand Write Speed Write Time
Memorex (Ultra Speed) 24x 4:42
Ritek 24X CDRW 24x 4:37

3. Over-burning & 99min CDRs

The Pioneer DVR-108 cannot write to 99min CDRs, however, I did find it quite odd that I was able to burn one music compilation CD of 92min without any playback issues.  The problem is that this was the only one I could create.  After that first one, I couldn't overburn anymore.  This is the first time I ran into this.  It's usually yes or no, but with this drive, it's a maybe.  I installed the drive on another one of my test systems and couldn't duplicate the 92min burn.  Very odd indeed.

Overall, the results of our CD write tests were very good.  It wrote to all media at its rated speed without any issues.  The only thing in question at the moment is whether or not this drive can indeed over-burn at least slightly.
