D-Link Wireless Gaming Gear - GamerLounge Router + Accessories

Model:  DGL-4300, DGL-3420, DWL-G520

Manufacturer:  D-Link

Provider: D-Link

One of the unexpected highlights of my trip to CES this year was a chance to sit down with the PR folks over at D-Link. If you’re a gamer, surely the crown jewel in their lineup is the DGL-4300 GamerLounge router with GameFuel. Not only was this unit prominently on display at their booth, D-Link was also quick to offer us a chance to review the DGL-4300 as well as a few other Gaming goodies – the DGL-3420 Gaming Adaptor and the DWL-G520 Xtreme G 108 PCI adaptor. I’m happy to finally present the results of my three week run in this review. If you’re looking for a new router, you will want to read this review!

Packaging & Contents

D-Link sent us a complete Super G wireless kit…I’ll go over each individual unit.

First and foremost is the DGL-4300 router. The box is pretty enough, but the router itself is a stunner considering what your average router looks like. With a satin black finish, mirrored front, and blue LEDs, it just doesn’t get much better looking than this. Spin the box around and it turns out the good stuff doesn’t stop with the looks. Four Gigabit Ethernet ports and a detachable 5 dbi antenna complete the package. D-Link includes stacking feet, and a vertical stand if you want to prop this up on a shelf, and there are two screw mounts on the bottom of the unit if you want to mount it on a wall. The 4300 does have a wall wart, but it’s actually pretty small and designed to fit in a power strip or wall socket without covering up an adjacent slot.

The DGL-3420 Gaming Adaptor is a simple device that allows you to connect your Playstation or XBOX to your wireless network. In line with the DGL-4300, this unit features the same satin black finish and blue LEDs. The antenna is small and adjustable, but not replaceable. The only connectors on the device are an Ethernet jack and a power jack. The DGL-3420 is managed through a web interface, much like the router.

DWL-G520

The final items D-Link sent out were a matched pair of their XtremeG DWL-G520 PCI Wireless adaptors. If you’ve ever uses a wireless PCI adaptor there’s really not much to say about these than they do support the 108Mbs wireless that I use already. Since both this card and my current network are both using the Atheros chipset, they should be interoperable. Also inside the package were the removable antenna and a half height PCI bracket…an essential addition if you want to use this in a small HTPC case. Kudos for adding that to the package D-Link! Interestingly, it’s the only one of the bunch with more than a one year warranty.
