Razer Diamondback 1600dpi Gaming Mouse Review

Model:  Diamondback

Manufacturer:  Razer, Inc.

Provider:  Razer, Inc.

Reviewed By:  Tom

Review Date:  01/19/05

Today I am lucky enough to be able to review the next evolution in Razer’s high performance mouse lineup…the Diamondback. With extremely high 1600 dpi resolution combined with Razer’s own Kärna engine, the Diamondback promises to be a very powerful gaming tool. We will run the Diamondback through our range of mouse pads, and also compare it to Razer’s last major offering – the Viper. On with the review!

This was the first product I ever received from Razer in the retail packaging, and I certainly like it. All the major details are covered, and the clear plastic allows you to check out the mouse itself. Razer also has a plug for the eXactMat on the side of the box…we’ll test that setup later in the review. The small tin on the side is a press kit, which had a few informative PDF files and some high resolution pictures.

Contained in the box, of course, are the Diamondback itself, a driver disk, and a small neoprene carry case with the Razer logo on it.

This particular Diamondback features the chromatic Chameleon Green paint job which is pretty sweet looking. It also comes in the translucent Salamander Red, which mimics the look of the Viper. A quick look over reveals quite a few differences between the two mice, foremost being a slight redesign of the buttons themselves and the addition of four side buttons. The Diamondback is just a little bit longer than the Viper, and slightly more narrow as well. The scroll wheel has also undergone a little tweaking, and now has a more firm action than the Viper did. The buttons are just a little bit wider, and feature a much more pronounced finger groove. The good stuff such as the long cable and Teflon feet has thankfully remained.

The neoprene case is significantly smaller than the one that shipped with the Viper, and is just big enough to hold the Diamondback itself. The funny belt loop is gone, but then again I don’t think that many people used that feature anyway. However, it is a simple no frills transportation solution, and will keep the Diamondback looking pretty for a long time.
