As
more consumers are turning to broadband services such as DSL & Cable, ethernet
broadband routers are becoming more and more popular among home users.
They are not only becoming easier to configure and manage, but are also quite
affordable. With the growing number of households having more than one
PC, there's no reason not to have one these days. D-Link is a long time
manufacturer of networking products offering solutions for both home users and
businesses alike. Today, we look at their 4-port ethernet
broadband router targeted mainly for home users. The DI-604 is an
small, easy to use router offering many features such as an advanced
firewall and VPN support.

Included in the box is the router, a CD that
includes the manual and install guide, power adapter, ethernet cable and quick
installation guide. The power adapter is quite nice. Unlike other
bulky adapters, it is slim and will occupy only one socket.

Probably the first thing you'll notice when you
take the router out of the box is its size. This thing is tiny!
It Measures in at a mere 5.6"x4.3"x1.2". It is definitely the smallest
router I have seen so far. It does not look as small in pictures so it
will surprise you when you see it in person. As far as appearance, it is
a decent looking router. Its silver and dark brown colors are
definitely unique. (Silver & Black would have looked nicer). On
the front, you have your LED's for your Power, WAN and port number which will
also serve as the activity LED. On the rear, you have your WAN port, 4
LAN ports, reset button & power supply connector. What's missing?
You'll notice there is no uplink port meaning only a maximum of four PC's can
be connected. This is the first router I have come across that doesn't
have one but being that the DI-604 is mainly targeted for home users, it makes
sense.
Update 05/17/03: The D-Link DI-604
intentionally does not have an uplink port. Every port on the DI-604 is
auto negotiating. You will be able to plug in a switch to any of the
available 4-ports and it will act as an uplink port. If a user
accidentally plugs in a crossover cable, the router will automatically fix the
issue.
