I
honestly consider myself a bit of an audio junkie. It all started back in
Middle School, when I wired up four speakers to an old boom box in an effort
to get surround sound in my bedroom…and it’s been all downhill from there! I’m
also the guy who won’t buy a DVD unless it has 5.1 surround…unless the movie
in question is too old to have it. So, I was extremely excited when HC
Technology (HCT) responded to our request to review their high end DH-720G
Dolby surround headphones. For those of you who haven’t heard of HCT yet, I’m
very sure you’ll be hearing a lot more about them in the coming year.
Producing both home theatre and headphone systems for both computers and AV
systems, HCT has a very impressive lineup of audio gear.

The
DH-720G headphones arrived in a very nice flip-top box that had all the
important information printed right on the inside of the flap. Even the
buttons on the control unit are clearly pointed out and labeled.

I
was certainly impressed with the construction of the headphones themselves.
With aluminum brackets holding the earpieces and a spring loaded suede head
support, these really look and feel like a premium headphone set. The DH-720G
is not marketed as a gamers’ headset, so there is no microphone.

The
box also contains quite a pile of goodies to go along with the headphones
themselves. Also included are a manual, a carrying bag, two fiber optic
cables, one double ended male 3.5mm audio cable, 3.5mm audio to RCA cable,
power supply, two rechargeable AA batteries, and a control box.

Considering how nice the headphones are, the control box seems a little cheap.
However, it does have a lot of functionality to make up for that. Accepting
either a Digital or Analog signal over a Toslink optical or 3.5mm audio jack,
this little box can present the signal in Stereo, Dolby Surround, or DTS. The
box also features test, output, volume, and mute controls. The indicators
feature bright blue LEDs, except for the DTS LED which is red.
