Optorite DD1203 Dual DVD+- RW 12x Recorder Review

DVD Write Tests

The Optorite DD1203 is capable of writing to DVD+R media at 12x and DVD-R media at 8x.  My main goal in the DVD write tests is to determine the best suitable media for the drive.

1. DVD+R Media

Again, discs capable of writing at 12x are very hard to come by.  However, I did have some high quality discs on hand that are capable of writing at this speed.

Using high quality Taiyo Yunden media, we were able to burn exactly 4.35GB in just 6:52 minutes.  That's pretty damn fast, and just beat the Lite-ON SOHW-1213s and LG GSA-4120B by a slight margin.

DVD+R Brand 12X Result
Ritek 8x (Silver Shiny) FAIL (8x)
Ritek (Ridata Branded) 8x FAIL (4X)
Verbatim 8X FAIL (8X)
Lite-On 8X OK
Optodisc 8X FAIL (4X)
That's 8x (Taiyo Yunden) OK
Taiyo Yunden (Genuine) OK

DVD burners always seem to surprise me when it comes to media compatibility.  In this case, it was with the Ritek media.  The Optorite DD1203 was able to write at 8x to the Ritek (Silver Shiny) discs but only at 4x to Ritek (Ridata Brand) discs.  It was quite the opposite for the other 12x drives we looked at.  As I have stated in other reviews, most media branded by Optorite are discs I strongly recommend you stay away from.  I've never been able to burn to this media at their rated speed.  Aside from that, media compatibility in this format was pretty good, especially if you obtain some discs with Taiyo Yunden code.

2. DVD+RW Media

The Optorite DD1203 also handled DVD+RW discs quite well, burning to all brands at 4x.

DVD+RW Brand 4X Result
Memorex 4X OK
Maxell 4X OK
Ritek 4X OK

3. DVD-R Media

8x DVD-R discs are harder to find, however, the ones we did use for testing both burned at 8x without any issues.  They are both branded under PioDATA.  Clicking the brand below will show the label side of the disc.

DVD-R Brand 8X Result Manufacture ID
PioDATA 8X OK RITEKG05
PioDATA 8X OK TYG02

4. DVD-RW Media

4x media in this format continues to be very difficult to find so I can't provide you with a disc in this format capable of writing at 4x. However, all the 2x rated DVD-RW discs did work flawlessly.

Final Thoughts on DVD Writing

The Optorite DD1203's media compatibility results were pretty good.  Based on our tests, let's take a look at some of the recommended media for this drive.

DVD+R Format - Taiyo Yunden (12x), Verbatim (8x)

DVD-R Format - PioData (8x)

DVD+RW Format - Memorex, Maxell, Ritek
