Optorite DD1203 Dual DVD+- RW 12x Recorder Review

DVD Read Tests

As I do in all our DVD read tests, I will be testing both single layer and dual layer DVD's. For the dual layer tests, we will look at both PTP and OTP disks. For those who are unfamiliar with these methods, I will briefly try to describe them each of them.

Dual layer discs are more than 4.38GB in size. There are two ways in which they write these discs. One is PTP, which stands for parallel track path, and the other is OTP which stands for opposite track path. In PTP discs, both layers read from the inside of the disc to the outside while OTP discs read from the inside to out and then back in for the inner layer. This allows the drive to read both layers almost continuously, with only a short pause to refocus the pickup lens. This is particularly useful for movies, where long play time without interruption is required.

1. CD-DVD Speed - Single Layer DVD

Test Results

Transfer Speed

Average: 8.25x

Start: 4.82x

End: 10.51x

Seek Times

Random: 133ms

1/3: 117ms

Full: 192ms

CPU Usage

1X: 7%

2X: 13%

4X: 25%

8X: 49%

On our single layer discs, the Optorite couldn't quite reach its 12x maximum read speed.  I tried this numerous times with different discs under 4.37GB and still experience that one spike somewhere during the test (usually toward the end).  The seek times and CPU usage, however, were very low and comparable to that of the LG 12x double layer writer.

2. CD-DVD Speed - Dual Layer PTP DVD

Test Results

Transfer Speed

Average: 5.87x

Start: 3.54x

End: 7.25x

Seek Times

Random: 117ms

1/3: 115ms

Full: 170ms

CPU Usage

1X: 7%

2X: 13%

4X: 25%

8X: N/A

The dual layer discs are usually where most drives struggle.  However, the Optorite DD1203 did very well in these tests, hitting its maximum 8x read rate.  Seek times and CPU usage remained low, with the exception of the 8x tests which it failed.

3. CD-DVD Speed - Dual Layer OTP DVD

Test Results

Transfer Speed

Average: 6.46x

Start: 3.54x

End: 8.50x

Seek Times

Random: 123ms

1/3: 120ms

Full: 194ms

CPU Usage

1X: 7%

2X: 13%

4X: 25%

8X: N/A

Again, we see the drive having no problem reaching 8x in our transfer tests.  We also continue to see fairly low seek times and CPU usage.

4. CD-DVD Speed - DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+R, DVD+RW

The Optorite DD1203 is capable of reading recordable media at a max rate of 12x.  The drive did very well with the exception of the re-writable discs.

Overall, this drive also did very well in our DVD read tests.  The only disappointments being the recognition times, which we will touch on a bit later.
