Features
Let's
take a brief look at the drive's main features.
The one feature that sets it apart from all the
rest, is its HD-Burn capability. For those who are unfamiliar with this
technology, HD-Burn
technology is found exclusively on Optorite DVD writers and has been developed
by Sanyo Electric Co. This new technology doubles the writing capacity of
conventional CDR media, allowing you to write 1.4GB of data onto a 700MB CDR.
While the ability to write 1.4GB of data on an inexpensive 700MB CDR sounds
exciting, the technology is so new that there aren't any DVD players capable
of reading the disc without a firmware modification. Sanyo does state,
however, that they will disclose the new technology and propose other DVD
manufacturers that they adopt this technology as an industry standard.
It has been a while since its introduction so I will be testing this feature
thoroughly and check compatibility as well.
Optorite drives feature Burn-Proof technology to
help prevent buffer under-run errors and allow multi-tasking while writing to
media. Although I never recommend you do this, especially when burning
DVD's.
The Optorite DD1203 is capable of writing to
DVD+R media at a maximum speed of 12x, provided quality supported media is
used. DVD-R discs can be written to at 8x, and re-writable media at 4x.
I will be checking 12x compatibility in our write tests later in this review.
Installation

As always, no issues encountered when
installing the drive. WinXP quickly recognized the drive properly.

Using Nero InfoTool, all supported features
were correctly identified. Mount Rainer, double layer writing and
DVD-RAM are not supported.
