As always seems to come up after a mouse
review, invariably the next question is “what mouse pad would you
recommend?” Well, a lot depends on personal preference, but one of the first
questions you should ask is whether you prefer a hard or soft surface.
Initially, the hard-surface pad might seem to be the more expensive of the
two, but that’s not always the case. Today, thanks to MyGameController, I’ll
be taking a look at their latest in-house creation dubbed Black Knight. This
rigid pad is cost effective and to the point, so let’s take a quick look!
Packaging
The
Black Knight arrived in a unremarkable cardboard envelope, so nothing to see
here…

…except the pad itself. The Black Knight is the most basic essence of what a
rigid pad needs to be. It has a well textured plastic surface with a
slightly beveled edge mounted on top of a foam rubber pad, to prevent
slippage. There are no gimmicks to talk about here, so we’ll move right on
to performance!

Performance
Given its straightforward nature I was pleasantly surprised at the quality
response I got using this pad with an assortment of high-performance
rodents. The A4 Tech X710 was surprisingly slick on this surface…I played
most of my testing run on Far Cry for that review on this pad.
MyGameController seems to have hit the right amount of texturing perfectly.
One thing that texturing does, aside from giving the optics something to
track, is to both support and minimize the contact area between it an the
mouse feet. The slickness was just a shade better than the Razer eXactmat on
both the slick and control sides, and pretty close to the Xtrac RipperXL.
Very impressive performance considering the price tag!
Conclusions

The
Black Knight is a remarkably nice pad, and if you’re on a budget you’d be
doing yourself a huge disservice not to take a look at it.
MyGameController.com has a really nice no-nonsense product here and it
was a pleasure reviewing it. List price over at MGC is only $8.96 USD. EM
recommended!
