Aopen MK77M-V Motherboard Review - Continued

Layout and Features

The I/O configuration is outstanding for a value priced motherboard:

  • 1 each PS2 mouse and keyboard ports

  • 1 x RJ45 LAN port

  • 1 x DB9 Serial port

  • 1 x DB25 Parallel port

  • 1 x Midigame port

  • 3 x Audio ports (Line-In/Line-Out/Mic-In)

  • 2 x USB 1.1. ports

  • 1 x VGA port

As you can see from the following picture everything is nicely laid out on the aesthetically pleasing blue motherboard.

The IDE and Floppy connectors are well positioned along the edges of the motherboard.

Don’t expect to use an Alpha heatsink or similar with the motherboard. A heatsink with a base footprint of approximately 65mm x 65mm will be the maximum size this board will accommodate.

The Via 8375 Northbridge chipset is passively cooled by a very impressive aluminum heatsink. The heatsink fit flush against the chipset, but we did remove it and apply Arctic Silver thermal compound to its base (as is our custom) in order to ensure maximum heat transfer.

For those that wish to use a 4X AGP card in lieu of the integrated graphics, an AGP slot is provided.  3 PCI slots and a CNR (Communication Network Riser) slot are also provided in order to accommodate future expansion requirements.

The ATX connector’s position on the motherboard is our only gripe. Care should be exerted to prevent the PSU’s ATX cables from interfering with the heatsink fan combination.

Audio is provided by way of the onboard VIA ’97 CODEC. In addition to the rear ports previously mentioned, an SPDIF1 header permits the use of third party audio extension brackets.

The onboard controller drives the standard 2 IDE channels, supporting a maximum of 4 devices at ATA 66/100/133 modes.

AMD CPUs operating at 200/266 FSB are compatible with the MK77M-V. The CPU frequency is set by way of a jumper.

In addition to the 2 rear USB ports, a motherboard header allows expansion for 2 more ports for a maximum of 4.

If you have an infrared device, this motherboard can implement SIR (standard IR) transfer function.

Memory is configured automatically in the BIOS. The 2 x 184-pin DDR DIMM banks allow a maximum of 2GB of PC2100 memory to be installed.
