Silverstone TS01B - Drive Enclosure with RFID Encryption

Performance

RFID Encryption

So does this unique method of encryption work?  You bet it does. What if you actually remove the drive from the enclosure and attempt to install it on a completely different system as an additional drive?  Will you be able to read it?  That's probably something many will be quite curious about and is something I tested thoroughly.

After properly activating the RFID feature and moving some sample data over, I took the drive out of the enclosure and connected it to a separate system running Windows XP via an internal SATA cable.  You cannot access any data on the drive.  In fact, if you go to Disk Management, it will ask you to initialize the drive and will show as unallocated, practically forcing you to format the drive.  Pop it back in the enclosure and when using the included key, you can access all data once again without issues.  I can confirm this feature works very well.

Hard Disk Performance

Actual drive performance will depend on many factors.  This includes the actual drive installed on the TS01B, the performance of all your PC components and the operating system used for testing.  Providing benchmarks on hard disk performance of such a product is really not something I like to do.  On the other hand though, some may want some sort of idea as to what to expect from a similar setup.  With that said, I did test it and will provide at least some performance results using a new Western Digital Scorpio 2.5" SATA drive.  I won't go as far as I normally do with storage products, but this should give you a general idea of what to expect.

For the tests, two tools were used.  The very latest version of SANDRA'S File System Benchmark and HD Tune.  The results are shown in the table below...

As mentioned in previous reviews where plenty of additional testing is done, HD Tune is simply a more reliable benchmark tool and provides more credible and highly consistent results.  With this particular setup, you're looking at maximum transfer rates ranging between 30MB/s and 33MB/s.  Access Times were between 13ms and 17ms.

Conclusions

The new Silverstone TS01B is a sleek and innovative hard drive enclosure designed for those looking for an added measure of security.  Installing your drive and setup of the unique RFID encryption is incredibly easy and functions flawlessly.  Also, unlike many drive enclosures, Silverstone includes plenty in the box along with it, including a very nice quality leather slip-in pouch.  EMHz Recommended!
