Silverstone TS01B - Drive Enclosure with RFID Encryption

Installation

The TS01B was tested on a brand new 2.5" SATA hard drive.  The drive of choice?  A Western Digital Scorpio 120GB drive.  This is actually very important to note because in order to take advantage of its RFID encryption, the drive you install must have all partitions present deleted.  Yes, that means that if you have an existing drive with data on it, you must first backup that data prior to deleting all existing partitions on the drive.  I tested this very thoroughly and it is the only way you'll be able to activate this unique feature.

Not much to cover here because the install of the drive couldn't be any easier.  You only have to remove the two long screws from the front end of the enclosure using the included screwdriver.  This basically removes the circuit board that contains the power and SATA connectors.  Just "plug" the drive in and slide it back in the enclosure.  That's all there is to it.

RFID & Software Install

Before I even show you how easy it is to activate the RFID feature, it is important to cover the included cables with the product because many may experience some issues with connectivity.

The TS01B not only ships with a convenient small USB to mini plug cable but also ships with a longer Y cable.  This is a cable that is actually included on some of their other products and not to be mistaken as one that will allow you to connect the device to two computers.  Since no optional A/C power adapter is included, this cable is designed to allow those with systems that don't draw enough power from USB to still connect it in this fashion.  I recommend using the smaller cable.  But if you experience any issues, you can plug in both USB plugs from the Y cable to eliminate any power related or connectivity issues.

Since this is such a unique enclosure, many may not be familiar with how it works and what is needed to activate this kind of encryption.  As mentioned above, you must install a new or un-partitioned drive in order to activate this feature.  After you are certain the drive is configured correctly, activating RFID encryption is very simple.  To demonstrate just how easy it is, I've created the video clip below.  You'll need the flash plug-in installed to view the video.

Flash Video Clip

When you connect the drive for the first time, you'll immediately hear three beeps and the status LED will blink blue/red.  Grab an RFID key and place it as shown in the video clip.  You'll then hear another beep and the status LED should now blink blue/green.  Grab the RFID key and place it once again on the same area.

This will activate the feature and the drive will now be recognized by the OS and installed.  On a Vista Ultimate System, you should now see it under "Disk Drives" in Device Manager.

The final step is to configure your drive for use.  This is easily done via Disk Management.  Upon launching it, you should get a dialog identifying the new disk and asking you to initialize it.  Once you have done this, go through the simple steps to define your partitions, format, assign drive letter, etc...

Once you have gone through these steps, you should now see it properly installed in Disk Management.  The drive is now ready for use.
