Swiftech MCX478-V Heatsink Review

Model:  MCX478-V

Manufacturer:  Swiftech

Provider:  Sidewinder Computers

Overclockers are always in search of the best cooling option for their system based on their budgets. Not everyone can afford a high performance water-cooled system and not many would want one either. You are left with an air-cooled solution and finding one that will offer acceptable cooling performance while maintaining low noise levels is quite difficult. Swiftech, as a leader in PC cooling technology, offers air cooled solutions without compromising performance. We have looked at a few high-end water blocks from Swiftech in the past and were highly impressed with them. Today, we'll take a different turn and take a look at their high-end P4 air-cooled heatsink, the MCX478-V. This uniquely designed heatsink was designed to provide the highest level of performance while maintaining noise levels at a minimum. How is this acheived? They focus more on the heatsink design itself rather than relying on a high RPM fan to do most of the work. Its one of a kind design is quite remarkable and rather intriguing and one can't help but take a closer look at it and possibly consider it as an option.

The heatsink comes in the usual plain box that most other Swiftech heatsinks come in.  Included are the P4 retention clips, four 80mm to 90mm brackets, four convenient snap-in plastic rivets, installation instructions and Arctic Alumina thermal compound.

This is one spectacular looking heatsink.  It's quite heavy and of the highest quality.  Unlike its similar predecessor, it consists of a full copper base and unique helecoid shaped pins that are bent at multiple angles.  The spacing or angles between them have been precisely calculated not only to optimized cooling, but to reduce noise levels as well.  Overall, the design is quite clever and its main purpose, aside from the fact that it is quite stunning to look at, is to promote increased turbulence for more efficient heat dissipation.

The copper base is polished and has a near mirror finish.  Ours had some dark marks on the CPU area but they were not actually scratches.  Although the marks did quite bother me, the surface is lapped and polished so well and feels so smooth that I would not dare to touch it.
