Abit IC7-G Canterwood Motherboard Review

Board Layout

The Abit IC7-G is a highly attractive motherboard.  Its aesthetically pleasing black/dark brown PCB combined with a rather unique chipset cooler add to its overall great looks.  With the exception of the IDE connectors, the board has a rather pleasant layout.

The is no heatsink on the southbridge.  The 4 SATA connectors are located below the IDE connectors.  Audio connectors are located right below the PCI slots.  The IDE connectors are vertical and are actually placed on the far right of the motherboard.   This may be a problem for some and may require the use of some longer cables, especially if you'll be installing in a full tower chassis.

There are 4 memory banks which support dual channel memory modules.  The PSU and floppy connectors are located directly above the memory banks.  The auxiliary power connector is positioned right above the first DIMM slot.

There are a few capacitors and one of the 4 available fan connectors located fairly close to the mounting bracket, however, there should be enough room to install a larger heatsink if needed.  The northbridge is passively cooled with a rather unique and attractive blue aluminum heatsink with a clear fan.  NOTE: The Abit IC7-G accepts only Pentium 4 800mhz processors.  If you own a P4 400mhz or 500mhz processor and looking to upgrade just your motherboard, you may want to take a peak at there IS7 series which offers about the same features and performance as the IC7.

The back I/O panel includes your usual keyboard, PS/2 mouse and printer port, one COM port, one firewire connector, four USB 2.0 connectors, one RJ45 LAN port and audio connectors which include one SPDIF/in and SPDIF/out connector.

As you can see, there was plenty of room to install even the massive Alpha P4 heatsink.  Those with large heatsinks or waterblocks should have no problem mounting them on this motherboard.
