Installation
The
VME BioDrive is a plug and play device and is compatible with all versions of
Windows, Linux and Macs. When installing on a Windows XP machine, it will
immediately recognize the drive after your fingerprint authentication is OK.
It will show up in your Device Manager under "Disk Drives". If you're
running Win98/SE, you will need to install drivers which are conveniently
included in the drive itself.

Clip
What's nice about the BioDrive is that it will
allow you to enroll up to 5 different fingerprint templates. Our
main concern was how well the sensor worked. I'm happy to report that we
had absolutely no issues with it and worked just as advertised. It easily identifies the correct
fingerprint. We show just how quick the authentication is in the demonstration video clip above. The
solid green light will indicate authentication is OK and will then immediately
be recognized and appear as a removable disk on your system.
Performance

The VME BioDrive is a USB 1.1 flash drive.
Unfortunately, it performed quite poorly. For testing, we used Sandra's
Disk Benchmark and compared the results to a floppy. Its transfer rate
was only 220KB/s, which is far below its rated speed of 900KB/s. Not
sure why it scored so low. We tried on different systems but the highest
score we could achieve was 220KB/s.
Conclusion
Regardless of its poor transfer rate, we think
the VME BioDrive is a step above all others in terms of security features.
It is a highly innovative product that would be suitable for those who are
looking for a personal storage device with security as their top priority.
It is compatible with just about any Operating System and is quite small when
compared to a majority of other flash drives. It has a protective
sliding cover to keep the fingerprint sensor free of scratches. They can
be picked up at
Meganet and are available in a variety of sizes ranging from 16MB - 1GB.
