Arctic-Cooling Silent 4ProL Heatsink Review

Model:  4ProL

Manufacturer:  Arctic Cooling

Provider:  Xoxide

Reviewed By:  Tom

Review Date:  05/09/04

Introduction

A major consideration for any computer build is noise. Most people are not obsessed with it, but there is a point when your computer is competing with your speakers, and it’s time to silence that racket! Today we’ll be looking at the Arctic-Cooling Super Silent 4ProL, thanks to the great team at Xoxide. Arctic-Cooling has been around for quite a long time, and offers a wide variety of quality products for silencing noisy machines. Let’s see if the 4ProL is up to standard!

Packaging & Contents

The 4ProL comes in a neat little plastic box that shows off the unique styling of this socket 478 cooler. This package contained the 4ProL itself, a 1.5 gram tube of thermal grease, installation guide, and case sticker.

The heatsink is just a little wider than the stock Intel one, and shares almost the same fan design. However, on the 4ProL the fan assembly is molded in clear plastic. Four LEDs can also be spotted pointing outward at each leg of the hub, promising to put on quite a show. The mounting brackets themselves are of a promising new design as well. Each clip has its own spring and hook, providing what looks to be an almost painless install.

Unlike many coolers on the market now, the 4ProL has an all-aluminum design. We will see how it performs later in the testing phase. The contact surface is machined, and small ridges can be seen and felt on the bottom. Lapping this surface might improve performance somewhat, but we’ll test it as it comes out of the box.

The cables of the 4ProL are neatly sleeved, and come attached to the heatsink itself and a PCI cover with a control switch on it. The switch has three settings, Low, Medium, and High. The power cable has a standard three pin connector.
